If you work with trucks, trailers, semi-trailers, vans, or agricultural machinery, lighting is not merely an aesthetic detail. It is safety, it is European regulation, and it is MOT compliance.
And this is where many professionals get confused: Just because an LED light works does not mean it is legal for road use.
Let’s look at the real differences that affect you on the road and during inspections.
1. Road Legality: What Makes the Difference
A type-approved LED light complies with European regulations and bears the corresponding marking on the lens (E-marking).
This means it can be legally installed on:
Trucks
Trailers and semi-trailers
Bodied vans
Registered agricultural vehicles
Industrial vehicles operating on public roads
A non-approved light may work perfectly… but it is not authorised as a regulatory light.

Visibility angle

There is no glare.
No electrical interference occurs.
Non-approved lights do not guarantee these parameters. And on a large truck or trailer, visibility is critical.
4. Difference Between Regulatory Light and Work Light
This is often a source of confusion.
A work LED spotlight may not be type-approved and can be used perfectly on:
Machinery within a construction site
Vehicles on private premises
Auxiliary lighting
But it never replaces a mandatory position, brake, indicator, or clearance light on a vehicle operating on public roads.
If the truck enters public roads, the regulatory lighting functions must be type-approved according to European standards.
5. Reliability in Professional Use
Type-approval is not just a legal stamp.
It usually means the product has passed tests for:
Vibration (critical for trailers and semi-trailers)
Sealing / Waterproofing
Electrical stability
In intensive use — daily delivery, agricultural work, heavy transport — low-quality lighting fails sooner.
And replacing a light during a working day is far from efficient.
Type-Approved LED: road-legal, complies with European standards, no MOT issues, regulated intensity, and higher reliability in professional use.
Non-Approved LED: not suitable as regulatory signalling, no valid certification for public roads, risk of failed inspection, unguaranteed intensity, and variable quality.
For trucks, trailers, semi-trailers, vans, or registered agricultural vehicles, the decision is simple:
If the light is part of the mandatory signalling and the vehicle operates on public roads, it must be type-approved.
It’s not a matter of aesthetics or price. It’s about legality, safety, and uninterrupted operation.
