ECE R65: LED Rotating Lights Certification Guide
Do you need to certify LED rotating and strobe lights? We explain in simple terms what the ECE R65 Regulation is, which vehicles it applies to, and why it is essential for your safety and compliance.
What is the ECE R65 Regulation and Why is it Mandatory?
If you use work, emergency, or special service vehicles, it is not enough for a light to be bright. It must be legal. ECE R65 is a European standard that ensures warning light devices (rotating, light bars, and strobe lights) are visible and effective, regardless of the time of day or weather conditions. Its main goal is safety. It ensures that intensity, color, visibility area, and flash frequency meet minimum requirements.
ECE R65 in Detail: Classes, Colors, and Application
1. Performance Classes (Class 1 vs. Class 2)
Class | Description | Main Use |
Class 1 | Day and night use. They have a single intensity. | Low to medium light environments (city interiors, secondary roads). |
Class 2 | Day and night use, with two intensity levels. | Essential in areas with strong sunlight. The light switches to low intensity at night to avoid glare. |

2. Standardized Colors
· Automotive Yellow (Amber): Construction and service vehicles, tractors, road maintenance vehicles, special transport escort vehicles. (This is the color you will sell the most).
· Blue: Police vehicles, ambulances, and other emergency services.
· Red/Magenta: Very specific uses (e.g., fire trucks in some countries, but less common in Spain/EU for rotating lights).
